A goniometer is a device used for angle measurements. Its purpose is similar to that of a protractor, but the shape and method of use for a goniometer are different. The goniometer has at least one extra "arm," or lever, which can be rotated to help determine the angle of position.
In physical therapy, occupational therapy, and athletic training, a goniometer is an instrument which measures a range of motion joint angles of the body. This measurement instrument is a helpful, clinical tool that allows for objective measurements in order to accurately track progress in a rehabilitation program.
Parts of a Goniometer: Body (Fulcrum) - The body of a goniometer is the centerpiece, usually circular or semicircular, with a protractor printed on its face and the fulcrum of the movement arm at its center. Generally, the fulcrum of the goniometer is placed over the center of a joint during measurement.
